PNWRR #66 – Kevin’s Adventures in Racing – Round 1
WMRRA Round 1 is in the history books for me. It was a fantastic weekend with the best weather for a season opener in recent memory. At least my memory.
I was more than a little tired going into the weekend. I had spent the previous week at ISC West for work in Las Vegas, NV. This is one of my largest work events of the year and it was 6am to midnight all week long. Not to mention the continuous entertaining… So I missed the Friday Adrenaline Freaks Track Days sessions completely, but at least my teammates, Bailey, Sarbora & Featherstone made it out and set up the pits. Sarbora dynamited another engine (DAMN!) and didn’t get to race, but he was there to support the team the rest of the weekend. I flew home from Vegas Friday night, arriving at home around midnight. Got a good five hours of sleep and got my ass to the track first thing Saturday morning. Damn I must be crazy!
The team pit was a little disjointed with Randy on the back side of Bridgestone and Eric and me out on pit entry lane, but I was glad just to have a spot after missing Friday’s testing. We’ll get it right next round. Still great to be out with everyone.
Saturday was beautiful and sunny and it smelled good and looked good and was good! The sweet smell of ace fuel was in the air and I had some of it too. Huffing ProV1 is pure bliss! A couple of practice sessions were all I was going to get before the first race and I still had the willies big-time.
The 600 SuperSport race was a great “ice-breaker” for me since it had been since early October 2008 since I was last in a contest. I forgot to turn on my VholdR camera, so I did not get any video, but I finished 22nd of 29. Really crappy, but I survived.

There were a couple of close calls in the first lap, but I settled in real nice. My start was probably the best I’ve ever had! A much better finish. 18th of 33.
Sunday proved to be as nice as Saturday and I showed up at 7am to get ready for the day. I kept dragging my lower fairing in T3 so I had Barry check out my suspension. We added 8mm of ride height and that did the trick. Feels really weird dragging your fairings through a corner. And the guys behind me said I was smoking! Cool! With the additional height, the bike tipped in much faster and it upset the way I was used to the bike.

So I’m not all that fast, but making progress. I did have a great time Sunday! Plenty of good racing, friends and beers… My drinking team has a racing problem for sure!!!
